An autumn yard goes wrong when raking, gutters and trees are treated as one pile of work. They are different jobs, and the wrong order shows up in winter as a slippery path or water running down the wall.
When should autumn yard work actually start?
When the leaves are down and the nights turn cold, not when the path is already slippery. In Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa that often lands in late September, but the yard matters more than the calendar. A large tree drops its leaves on a different day from the hedge. If you wait until everything is down at once, the first leaves have time to get wet and pack onto the path. Start with the routes people walk. A tidy lawn can wait a day. A safe path cannot.
Is it enough to rake the leaves myself?
On a small yard, yes, if the layer is thin and you finish the same day. A thick mat of wet leaves on a path is not a looks problem. It is a slip, and under snow it freezes immediately. Do not pile wet leaves on the lawn for the winter. The lawn suffocates, and in spring the same heap is a mouldy pile you still have to move. Leaves belong in a compost, a bag, or a collection, not on the edge of the path. If the yard is too big for an evening, it is no longer raking. It is a job.
What about gutters?
Do not leave a gutter until spring. A blocked gutter sends autumn rain and meltwater onto the wall, the eaves and the foundation. Ice does the damage you cannot see through the leaves. Check the gutter, the downpipe and the storm drain before the frost. A drain full of leaves floods the path as soon as it rains. This is not a rake job if the gutter is high. A ladder against a wet wall is a common place to get hurt. Trees, shrubs and leaves covers the planting. The gutter and the roof edge need someone who can work up high safely.
What do people get wrong every autumn?
They cut shrubs too late, after growth has already stopped, and leave the cuttings at the base of the hedge. They also wait for one volunteer day that is supposed to cover leaves, branches and gutters. By then the path is already unsafe. Another mistake is leaving a branch that reaches over the roof. Snow catches on it and the load moves to the eaves. Ask before the shears or the saw are in your hands if you are not sure how far a shrub can be cut.
When does it make sense to call you?
When the yard is large, the gutters are high, or nobody in the housing company owns the leaves. One visit before the frost is clearer than a frozen gutter and a slippery path. Call also if a tree leans over the roof or a route. That is not a rake job. Property maintenance can take the autumn visit and the winter agreement together, so snow does not lock an unfinished job in place.
What do you actually do?
We collect leaves off the routes, tidy shrubs as far as the season allows, and look at the trees and the gutter lines on the same visit. The waste does not sit in a pile by the gate. It leaves in a bag, or on a skip if there is a lot of it. We say beforehand what belongs to the visit and what is a separate job, such as felling a tree or working at the roof edge. After that the yard is fit to walk when the first sleet arrives.
