Volunteer days rarely fail because people cannot carry things. They fail because the waste has nowhere to go when the day starts.
Why do volunteer days often end in a pile of waste?
Because things are brought into the yard before anyone has agreed what may go in a skip or a bag, and when it will be collected. A pile by the gate is not a cleanup. It is the same problem, moved to a place where it gets wet and collects more. A week later nobody remembers whose sofa or paint tin it is, and the bill is a surprise. The day should start with the skip or the bag already in place.
Is one skip enough?
Often yes, if you limit beforehand what may go in. A mix of a sofa, soil and paint does not leave easily, because the receiving site and the price depend on the contents. One clear skip for wood or mixed waste is cheaper than a skip that has to be sorted afterwards. Order a skip days before the volunteer day, not on the morning when the yard is already full of bags.
What should the board decide in advance?
The time, a place for the skip that does not block the rescue route, and a named person who watches what goes in. Without a watcher, a neighbour brings renovation waste that was never agreed. Also decide what must not come: paints, batteries, tyres and hazardous waste. And who pays if the skip fills with the wrong things. A note in the stairwell the week before prevents most of the surprises.
Does ice come into this too?
In December, yes. A cleanup day does not remove the duty to grit. The yard can be clear of clutter and still slippery. Snow and ice are handled separately, on an agreed round, not by hoping the volunteers remember. The skip must not stand on the rescue route even for one night.
When do you not recommend a volunteer day at all?
When the work is on a roof, in a tree, or with a machine. A volunteer day suits a basement, a storage room, and yard clutter a person can carry. It does not suit snow off a roof, felling a tree, or collecting grit by machine. If the subject of the day is dangerous, cancel it and order the work. Enthusiasm does not replace a harness.
What happens after the skip?
We collect it at the agreed time. The waste does not sit in the yard until next month as a reminder that nobody watched the contents. If the skip fills during the day, that is reported at once, not by stacking things beside it. An empty yard is the point of the day, not a full skip and a second pile next to it.
