A waste pile on the yard looks temporary. It is not. In a week it gets wet, collects more, and becomes a job that costs more than a bag would have cost at once.
Why does a waste pile on the yard get expensive?
Because the pile does not stay the size it was left. A neighbour or the next renovation adds to it, rain wets the wood and the plasterboard, and the receiving site prices a wet mixed load higher. In the end someone pays for an urgent collection when snow or a note from the housing company forces it. A pile is not temporary storage. It is unfinished work, and it takes the yard out of use the whole time it sits there.
When is a bag the better choice?
When there is more waste than a car boot, but not a full skip. A bulk bag stays on the yard for the agreed time and is collected. You do not have to invent a receiving site or book a Saturday for a trailer. A bag suits yard waste, renovation wood, and the amount two people can fill in a controlled way. If there is a roomful, the bag fills and the rest becomes a pile again. Then a skip is the right tool.
What should not go in the bag?
Paints, solvents, batteries, tyres and other hazardous waste. They do not belong with building or yard waste, and the wrong contents stop the collection. Ask before you fill it if you are unsure. One paint tin at the bottom can make the whole pickup a problem. Hazardous waste goes to its own reception, not into the yard bag in the hope that it disappears with the load.
Can I take the load myself?
A small dry lot, yes, if you know where you are driving. As soon as you need a trailer, a tarp and a free Saturday, the time is already more expensive than a collection. The wrong receiving site means the load comes back, or you queue and sort it again in the yard. If you have not taken a load like this before, a bag is usually the tidier choice.
How does this fit autumn renovation?
In September people take down decks and clear storage before winter. If the pile stays, it is still there when the snow comes, and nobody tidies it in the frost. Get it away before the freeze. Wet wood under snow is a spring problem, not an autumn saving. The same applies to a housing company volunteer day: the skip or the bag is in place before anything is carried out.
What do you do when the bag is full?
We collect it at the agreed time and take the material for handling. The yard is empty. It is not the starting point of the next volunteer day. If the bag fills halfway, that is reported before things start piling beside it. We also say beforehand what the load may contain, so the pickup does not stop in the yard.
